In this class your will explore the use of colors, shapes and lines as the defining elements of design as you build the quilt blocks and arrange them to construct a completed quilt top, or finished quilt. The class will involve a short 10-15 instruction period each day with the remainder of the class period serving as your time to design, cut and construct your quilt blocks. Once you have warmed up to the process, you will be challenged with making a very large collection of blocks, a pallet, so to speak from which you will work in constructing your quilt top. The pace will move quickly allowing for your creative intuition to be your guide, overriding any learned habits of mind such as overthinking, doubt and fear of the unknown. This will result in a new way of looking at the art of quilts and perhaps influence the way you see world.

Instructor: Christopher Bowen

Christopher Bowen is a master teacher and quilt artist able to sequence the most intricate and difficult learning experiences into manageable, fun and stress-free steps unleashing unbounded creativity. Having studied with some of the world’s leading quilt artists including Smithsonian quilter, Nancy Crow, Christopher’s quilts have been commission by other quilters and lovers of art throughout North America. His unique approach to quilting provides novice and advanced quilters alike a new freedom to develop truly unique artistic works.

There will be homework in-between two session, so be prepared to do some extra sewing (like we had to twist your arm!).

Skill requirements: Basic machine sewing skills and previous quilt making experience required. You don't need to be an expert by any means, but we don't have time to cover the basics of quilt making during this workshop.

Material requirements:

The more fabric you bring, the more design choices you will have.

  1. At least ½ meter up to a whole meter of 10 – 15 different cotton solids. The colors you choose should range from values of dark to light in a dynamic array of hues. Bland to neon and all solids in between are perfect. Cotton blends are also acceptable.
  2. A sharp rotary cutter (the store has a large supply for your use, if you like)
  3. Your sewing machine OR the store has a studio classroom equipped with excellent machines for you to use.
  4. Thread for piecing
  5. A snack (You will get hungry!!) Tea is provided.

All materials purchased from The Makehouse will be discounted by 20%

Equipment requirements: We encourage you to bring your machine from home so that you can work with the one you're used to, however you are welcome to use on of the studio machines if you prefer.
